Guidelines for Writing Aims and Intended Learning Outcomes at the Programme and Course level

These guidelines have been developed by Dr Sarah Mann of the University's Learning and Teaching Centre.  They are essentially generic in nature and make no particular distinction between programme and course ILOs.  They highlight the need for ILOs to be expressed in terms which permit student assessment to measure the extent to which the intended outcomes are realised.  In this University, however, almost all assessment is conducted at the course level.  As a result, it is possible for programme level ILOs to be drafted in terms which do not align explicitly with corresponding statements of assessment provision.

The Guide to the Code of Assessment attempts to explain why careful attention should be given to the writing of aims and intended learning outcomes.
